Towing Arms
Over the last ten years, we have been involved in applying the Certification Rules of the Large Vessel Tackle Regulations of Transport Canada. This involes; inspecting design verification of rigging systems, load testing, and certifying numerous vessels of the largest fishing fleets.
More recently a local fabricator came to us in search of repair procedures for the towing arms located on six scallop vessels for two major customers.
These towing arms are designed to drag a large basket along the floor of the ocean picking up scallops as the ship moves. They take large impact forces due to contact with obstructions. These impact forces resulted in damage to the towing arms on numerous occasions. These repairs have ranged from cracks found in existing welds, reinforcing the arms with new steel gussets, to total redesign of the entire system. Pins have been built up and re-aligned. We have completed numerous repair procedures for these applications. Below you will find various photos of these repairs.
